ON HORNS - THE TOM WALSH HORNS

Just a few weeks before wrapping up tracking for the album, I realized one of the tunes would really benefit from having a proper horn section on it. As I was going through my options, I came to think of this up-and-coming trumpet player/arranger out of the UK, Tom Walsh, whose Dirty Loops horn covers had caught my attention a while back. Knowing that Tom & the guys are very busy on the UK session scene, I contacted him to see if a) they'd be interested in playing on the song, and b) if they'd have time to do it on such short notice. As luck would have it, not only were they happy to be part of it, they'd be able to get it done within a few days too! So, using my synth horn arrangement as the framework, Tom made adjustments where needed, and added a bunch of his own ideas to it, and before I knew it everything was recorded and done! Did I hear anyone say "proficient"!?

Btw, here's a fun fact: when I first contacted Tom he told me that he had actually written a horn arrangement on my tune "Splinter" (off Luna Nueva) some time ago, but unfortunately hadn't gotten around to recording it yet. Seeing as it has become quite a fan favorite over the years, I hope we get to hear a horn cover of that one too eventually! :)

As mentioned above, these guys are some of the best studio players the UK has to offer, their list of credits includes artists such as Al Jarreau, Jamie Cullum, Paloma Faith, Van Morrison, Mark Knopfler, Mica Paris, Culture Club, Paul Carrack & Shirley Bassey, to name a few. Tom can also be heard on Porcupine Tree/King Crimson drummer Gavin Harrison's newly released album Cheating the Polygraph, which some of you might be familiar with! In addition to being in demand session musicians, all of them also have their own groups & solo projects, see links below for more on that!

ON VOCALS #2 - ACCENT

A cappella music is something that has been with me for as long as I can remember. Growing up, my dad (a now-retired countertenor) always played records by The King's Singers, The Real Group & The Singers Unlimited around the house. I can vividly recall hearing The King's Singers' beautiful arrangement of "And I Love Her" (The Beatles) for the first time.. man, after that there really was no turning back, I was hooked! Later on, I immersed myself in the music of groups like Take 6, New York Voices & The Manhattan Transfer. I transcribed a lot of Take 6 in particular, and eventually attempted to write a few close harmony vocal arrangements of my own, some of which ended up on my last album Painter's Portrait.

In 2012, while in the midst of writing material for Equanimity, I started seeing all these great a cappella multitrack videos popping up on YouTube, and as I dug deeper I came across Evan Sanders' wonderful take on "Some Children See Him". I liked it so much that I reached out to him to see if he'd be interested in singing on a new piece I'd been working on. Evan was really into the idea, and suggested featuring Accent on it, a virtual a cappella sextet that he and some other YouTubers had formed about a year prior. On checking out their covers of the Take 6 classics "Gold Mine" & "Get Away, Jordan", I was amazed at how well their voices blended together, and how they had managed to achieve that real tight group sound, despite being spread out in different corners of the world. So, I immediately set about rearranging the piece to better utilize the vocal range of the group, and I think it goes without saying, the guys killed it!

Accent is, in my opinion, the best "new" vocal group around, carrying on the legacy of the greats before them, while also putting their own spin on it. They just released their debut album Here We Are earlier this year, so definitely check that out! And while you're at it, have a look at the EPK below - their backstory is pretty cool!

For more info on Accent, please go to accentvocal.com.

ON VOCALS #1 - GÖRAN EDMAN

Ok, now this one's pretty special to me! See, as a kid I went through a huge Yngwie Malmsteen phase (thanks in large part to Yngwie's sister, who is good friends with my mom and borrowed me a bunch of LPs) - Rising Force, Marching Out, Trilogy, Odyssey, Eclipse, Fire & Ice... I wore all those albums out! Eclipse and Fire & Ice in particular has stuck with me though, and one of the biggest reasons for that is Göran Edman. There is something about the timbre of his voice that just hits me square in the chest. The high-pitched stuff he does is obviously amazing, but I've always found the other side of his singing to be equally impressive, especially that soulful, blues-infused thing that he does so well. Needless to say, to have had the opportunity to work with one of my childhood idols on this record has been nothing short of a dream come true!

While he is perhaps best-known for his stints with Yngwie Malmsteen & John Norum (of Europe fame), Göran has also spent the last 20+ years as an in-demand session singer, including multiple appearances with Street Talk, Crossfade & The Flower Kings' bassist Jonas Reingold's project Karmakanic, among others.

More info on Göran can be found at goranedman.com & on his Facebook page.

ON FLUGELHORN - JONNE BENTLÖV

The idea to have Jonne play flugelhorn on some song was originally conceived during the writing stages of my second album Painter's Portrait. However, the song I had intended for him to play on was scrapped in favor of "Just a Thought (Interlude)" shortly before recording began, so it never materialized. Jonne still appeared on that album though, playing trumpet as part of the horn section that was featured on a couple of tunes, but I digress. Fast forward to the writing of Equanimity, and one of the first things I did was to compose a song with Jonne's playing in mind. He is such a melodic & tasteful player, and his phrasing is just beautiful, so I wanted a fitting vehicle for that kind of playing. Something a bit more serene, mellow & ambient sounding, and I must say it turned out gorgeous!

Jonne is keeping busy with a number of projects - he's got a new album due out soon with Jonne Bentlöv Quintet, an EP & a full-length CD coming later this year with Neighbourhood (a band that also includes saxophonist Jens Filipsson, a familiar name to those of you who have my first two albums), and he's currently recording and touring with Swedish Grammy winners Bo Kaspers Orkester, considered one of Scandinavia's most acclaimed live acts and best-selling groups.

ON PIANO/SYNTH - JOEL LYSSARIDES

Most of the songs I wrote early on for this album had an obvious jazz quartet vibe to them, so right out the gate I knew I would need a pianist who's got that type of thing down. Later on, when Björn Arkö got on board, Joel's name immediately popped up in my head. Not only because he is a phenomenal pianist, but also because he & Björn have a history of playing a lot together in various situations, so I knew that their interplay would be a great asset, and really benefit these songs.

Joel is without a doubt one of my favorite "up-and-coming" pianists, and someone you'll hear a lot more from in the years to come, for sure!
ON SAX/EWI - BJÖRN ARKÖ

When writing material for this album I listened a lot to the likes of Michael Brecker, Bob Berg & Mike Stern. Not that that's anything new - that stuff is always in heavy rotation in this household - but I guess it must've rubbed off on my writing, because what I ended up with was a collection of tunes that had tenor/soprano sax written all over them!

Which leads us to Björn, who is someone I've wanted to work with for quite some time. Actually, the first time I heard him was at an outdoor concert in 2009, where his group played "Thrill Minute" (the opening track off my first album Luna Nueva)! Now, it's always cool to hear your songs interpreted by others, but what I remember the most from that gig is that I was really impressed with Björn's mature sound and technical abilities on the horn (he can't have been more than 16 or 17 years old at the time), so his playing obviously appealed to me right off the bat! On Equanimity, Björn is featured on both tenor/soprano sax and EWI (acronym for Electric Wind Instrument), and as expected he delivers the goods big-time!

Björn is currently working on the debut album of his quartet Björn Arkö Group, and you can also hear him with HAON, a new project that he's co-leading with Japanese guitarist Souta Niihara.

ON GUITAR - CARL MÖRNER RINGSTRÖM

For the last couple of years Carl and I have talked on and off about joining forces on some project (since around the release of Luna Nueva, if memory serves me right), and I'm stoked that we could finally make it happen on Equanimity (only took us 6 freakin' years)! In my opinion he is one of the most happening guitarists on the scene today, his playing is full of interesting concepts & ideas, he's got ridiculous dexterity, and I also love how - contrary to the majority of extended-range guitar players out there - he uses the full range of the 8-string guitar in his solos.

Carl has spent many years touring & recording with Danish jazz singer Malene Mortensen, in 2013 he released an album under his own name (Neocolony), plus he's also a member of fusion trio The Effect (alongside Jonathan Lundberg & Henrik Linder), and recently debuted his new band Majestic Orchestra at the BMW Welt Jazz Award 2015 in Munich, Germany.

ON PERCUSSION - ANDREAS EKSTEDT

Andreas has been my go-to guy for percussion since we first worked together on Luna Nueva. He is actually the only one on Equanimity who's appeared on all three of my albums, and no wonder - the guy is super inventive, grooves like a mofo, and really has a knack for coming up with all these cool little parts that add perfectly to the whole vibe of a song, and help to take it up a notch!

Andreas is a sought-after session musician and can be heard on several recent releases, maybe most notably on Dirty Loops' debut album Loopified from last year.

ON DRUMS - JONATHAN LUNDBERG

When it became clear that Aron Mellergårdh wouldn't be able to make the recording this time around due to his growing commitments with Dirty Loops, I set out searching for someone to step in and take over the drumming duties. Considering the music covers a lot of ground and can be quite technically demanding at times, I needed someone who could play real solid time, and with chops galore to boot - enter Jonathan Lundberg.

Me & Jonathan crossed paths briefly back in 2008 already, when I was over at Erik Linder's studio tracking guitars for Luna Nueva, and Erik's brother Henrik (of Dirty Loops fame) & Jonathan were there working on Jonathan's solo project. Since then we've bumped into each other here and there, and over the years it's become obvious that we have a lot of the same influences musically, so it really was a no-brainer to contact him when looking for Aron's replacement. Besides being an amazing session player, he's a great guy and a great hang! He also plays a mean double pedal, which, as it happened, turned out to come in handy...

As mentioned above, Jonathan has a solo project which is well worth checking out.
Hey guys,

I hope this finds you well & that you're enjoying the summer!

Apologies for the recent lack of updates - after a few intense weeks of writing for the new album I decided to take some time off to clear my head, and get some distance to the stuff I've come up with so far.

Dunno about you, but for me taking a step back every now and then to gain perspective on what I'm doing is vital & really helpful. It's easy to lose track of the big picture when you're making an album (especially when you're wearing a lot of hats), so stepping away for a little while enables you to approach the creative process with a better overview & fresh ears again.

Speaking of new material - I have 5 songs that are more or less done at the moment, and my aim is to have another 4-5 songs written by the end of summer/early fall. I'm sort of a slow writer, not because I lack ideas, I just tend to be very picky. Though I generally see that as a good thing (doing stuff in a half-assed, haphazard sort of manner is a definite no-go for me!), the negative aspect of it is that it slows down the process, which sadly means that it takes longer before you guys actually get to hear the end result!
Hey guys,

Sorry about the recent radio silence, hectic times! As those of you who have read the previous posts know, the plan was to finish the mixing & mastering of the new album in late December. Unfortunately time ran out on us (as it always tends to do), and due to conflicting schedules it wasn't until late February that we managed to get together again and get the mastering done.

The last few weeks me & Peter Almgren have been hard at work putting the final touches to the album artwork. We decided early on to try a more sparse look this time (Peter also did the design for Luna Nueva), and now that I have the finished artwork in front of me all I can say is that not only does this record sound great, it's going to look great as well! (A reason as good as any to get your hands on a physical copy upon its release, huh!?)

The new album is entitled Painter's Portrait & will be released on Innate Groove Records.
Hey everyone, a quick report from the studio!

Me & Karl Persson spent Tuesday recording sax & flute with Jens Filipsson. Listening back to Luna Nueva, I felt like I wanted to make this 2nd album a bit more diverse in some aspects. As I've told you earlier, there's some chanting/a cappella singing on the album - another new thing is that Jens is featured on flute, soprano, alto & baritone sax this time. Having these different sounds certainly adds a cool vibe to the project that I really like, and I'm sure you will too! Unfortunately time ran out on us this week, so we still have a little bit of soprano/alto left to record, but we'll finish up within the next few days!

[Missing image] Jens tracking sax/flute.

Having a real horn section on this album was also one of the first decisions I made. I actually had plans to have one on Luna Nueva, but it didn't work out for various reasons. For this record though, I was determined to have one! Just as with the vocal arranging I wrote about in my earlier post, having a real horn section on a few songs gave me the chance to try arranging for horns - something I've wanted to do since first hearing Michel Camilo's brilliant record, One More Once. Even though it was a first for me, I think the arrangements came out really nice, and Jens, Jonne Bentlöv & Peter Fredriksson pulled it all off beautifully!

[Missing image] Jens, Jonne & Peter talking about & trying out one of the arrangements.

Last thing we did was Steinar Aadnekvam's acoustic guitar solo. For those of you who haven't heard about him, Steinar is an amazingly gifted guitarist, playing - almost exclusively - the nylon-string guitar, and focusing mainly on brazilian/latin music. He just released his debut album Simple Things, an album I highly recommend btw! So, anyway, he came in, tore it up & we ended up with a really cool solo!!

[Missing image] Steinar going through the chart.

Me & KP will start mixing real soon, and aim to have it done before the end of the year.. fingers crossed!

Best,
Johannes

Ps. Luna Nueva hard copies are still on sale for only $8.99 on CD Baby & Abstract Logix, head over there and get your copy now if you don't have it already!
Ok everyone, high time for another update!

Let's take it from where I left off two months ago, shall we? Me & Erik Linder commenced work on & later recorded his parts in September. We decided pretty early to give the guitar more of a supporting role this time around, we both felt like it'd be a nice change since the guitars were pretty dominant on Luna Nueva. There's hardly no guitar leads or solos here, but don't despair! There's quite a bit of tasty comping happening!! Erik even managed to sneak some "Matinee Idol"-octaves into one of the songs, dunno if maybe that's his way of paying back, haha!

[Missing image] Erik in action.

Due to conflicting schedules we couldn't record the horn section in October as I had planned, and unfortunately November didn't work out either, so now we've postponed it to early December. Because of this, Kristian Persson has had to drop out, however, he's introduced me to another great trombone player, Peter Fredriksson, who will be replacing him on this project. If you have a minute, please check out his page, there's some great music to be discovered there!

Instead of recording the horn section, October/early November saw me getting together with Oskar Nilsson & Jonah Nilsson for some vocal sessions. Now, I've been a big fan of the Pat Metheny Group for a long time, and when I was in writing mode for this album I pictured some PMG-style chanting on two of the songs that I thought would make for a nice addition. So I got these two fantastic singers onboard for the project to add that flavor, and they did a brilliant job! I'm also into a lot of vocal music & groups like Take 6, New York Voices, The King's Singers, Manhattan Transfer, The Singers Unlimited etc., and one of the songs just seemed to beg for some a cappella-singing! This gave me the chance to have a go at arranging for voices, which is something I've always wanted to try, but never really had an opportunity to do before. I had lots of fun with it, and as expected, the guys delivered (no surprise there)! I think it turned out very cool, hope you dig it once you hear it!

[Missing image] Oskar & Jonah exercising the vocal cords.

What else? Oh yes, Andreas Ekstedt has finished the percussion tracks - there's some seriously hip things going on there! He's been experimenting a lot with different ideas and the stuff he's added to the mix really brings out the groove & overall feel of the songs he's featured on. Strange how big a difference a little bit of percussion does, huh?

Also, in order to save time I've spent some days with Karl Persson pre-mixing (setting sounds, levels etc.). This means that as soon as we've recorded the horn section in December, we'll be able to mix & master the album quicker, which consequently means that you'll be able to get your hands on it a lot sooner! Peachy, ain't it?

[Missing image] Karl working his magic.

Alright, I think that's all for now, I will be back with more in a few weeks, until then - Happy Thanksgiving & take care!

Best,
Johannes

Johannes Zetterbergtag:johanneszetterberg.com,2005:Post/61496972010-09-05T02:00:00+02:002015-08-22T17:53:27+02:00*MYSPACE BLOG* September update

Hey all,

Once again it's been a while since I filled you in on the progress of the new album, you think I should've learned by now, huh...!?

So, what's happened since last time? Well, I wrapped up the bass recording in June, and planned to get all the rest recorded during July/August. However, I ended up going away for a week here & there, finding myself busy doing other stuff that I hadn't foreseen etc. So it's basically been standing still for a while. The good news, though, is that I've spent the last week or so picking up where I left off in June!

[Missing image] Yours truly, laying down some fretless.

So, now I'm working on getting all the guitars & percussion recorded, and actually, we've already gotten started on some of it! Jonas Isaksson (who also was featured as a soloist on my previous outing) has done some really nice Jeff Beck-ish work on one of the tunes, and I'll be hooking up with Erik Linder & Steinar Aadnekvam in the near future to get their parts recorded as well! Also, trying to keep it time-efficient, I've sent Andreas Ekstedt the tracks he'll be playing on, so that he can get started on those in his own studio asap. Hopefully this means we'll have the guitars & percussion finished around the same time..

[Missing image] More bass tracking.

In addition to the above, Peter Almgren has been hard at work with the artwork & he's got some very promising ideas, for sure. There's still a bit of tweaking to be done as far as the design/layout is concerned, but we're definitely getting there! I'll give you a sneak peek of it here once we've decided on the details.

[Missing image] Trying out some fretless ideas.

I've been getting some questions about the track listing for this CD & who will be featured on what song etc. The only answer I can give you at the moment is that you'll have to wait for it a bit longer, as I haven't really decided on all that yet. Somewhat disappointing, I know.. but hey, you know what they say, patience is a virtue...!

[Missing image] On a short break, talking & posing...

In closing, just a short note letting you know that Luna Nueva is available on CD Baby & Abstract Logix at the reduced price of $9.99 throughout September.
Hey everyone,

Hope you're doing good out there. Been a while since my last post, so I figured it's about time I brought you up to speed on how things are going with the new album!

It has taken us a wee while longer than expected, but after months of hard work (and a healthy amount of scrutiny!) we have finished recording the drums on my as-yet-untitled 2nd album. I'm psyched about the way it sounds so far, the guys have really done a brilliant job! There's plenty of killer stuff happening drum-wise, that's for sure!!

[Missing image] Aron laying down the groove.

While waiting for the drums to be recorded I took the opportunity of finishing up on various keyboard parts, so, pretty much all of the keys have been recorded as well. Next up is the low end, needless to say, that should be lotsa fun!! The plan is to commence tracking bass this week, however, with past experiences in mind (and also taking into consideration that I'm gonna have a bit of maintenance done on my basses first), it'll probably be another week or so.. bear with me!

Now, to answer some common questions I've been getting lately:

Regarding the music & the direction it's headed in - although we're still at a fairly early stage & the music's still evolving, I don't think it will differ that much from Luna Nueva in the end. The biggest difference probably is that it won't be as guitar-heavy this time, and also that I'll incorporate a few new elements on this record (more about that later).

[Missing image] A glimpse of the new music...

Regarding the artwork - I'm bringing back Peter Almgren, who did a fabulous job last time on Luna Nueva. I'm very happy to have him onboard for the project, we've already exchanged some cool ideas, and I look forward to see what he comes up with!

Regarding the mixing/mastering - Karl Persson will once again be at the helm to make sure it sounds just as good as the debut (if not better!), and in addition to that he's sharing drum duties with Aron Mellergårdh on the album, playing drums on one track.

[Missing image] Karl trying out the arrangement.

Another thing that quite a few of you have asked me about is the line-up, if there will be any special guest appearances and so on. So, below is a list of the cats (some old, some new) that will be featured on this release:

You can now purchase Luna Nueva from Swedish record label Zink Music's online store! Although they ship worldwide, it's mainly a good alternative for those of you who are living in Sweden and don't feel like waiting 1-2 weeks for delivery. Also, they will be present at the big record fair in Solnahallen on February 27, so if you're living in the vicinity of Stockholm (or just happen to be visiting during that weekend) this would be a great opportunity to get your hands on some fine music!

If you prefer to use another store, I have listed a few of the other places where you can find Luna Nueva below.

Abstract Logix

PLG Media (CD/download - ships from Sweden)

Audiophile Imports

CD Baby (CD/download)

iTunes (download only)

Amazon (CD/download)

Lala (download only)

Tradebit (download only)

Verizon V-Cast (phone application - download only)

Napster (download only)

Great Indie Music (download only)

Didiom (phone application - download only)

More updates later, stay tuned...
/Johannes

Jonathan Fritzén - who can be heard tickling the ivories on the title track of Luna Nueva - released his 2nd album VIP on May 22. The album features smooth jazz artists Jay Soto (guitar), Michael Lington (sax), Greger Hillman (sax) & singer Laila Adéle.

I was invited to make a guest appearance on the track "Day After Day" along with partner-in-crime/drummer extraordinaire Aron Mellergårdh (who played a big part in the making of Luna Nueva). It was a lot of fun, and from what Jonathan's told me the response from listeners & buyers have been great so far!

In addition to the ones mentioned above, there's a bunch of really good supporting players on there too, so I feel super fortunate to have been included on this release!
With the release of Luna Nueva just around the corner, I've put together a track-by-track description with some info on the songs to get your mouth watered... enjoy!

Thrill Minute

- The opening track. This one's got a great "airy" groove which I pretty much stumbled upon when I was sitting at home noodling on the bass. The outro section was intended to serve as a fun vehicle for Aron (Mellergårdh, drums/percussion/loops) to solo over, with some hits and stuff going on underneath. But when arranging it he was hearing something else, and suggested that instead of a drum solo we could keep the groove going, and fill in the blanks with timbales & other assorted percussion. The inspiration was the Toto-track "Never Enough", in which they use a similar approach for the outro section. In the end, it turned out great & even better than my original idea... go figure, huh!? Also, Jonas (Isaksson, guitar) does a sweet job on the solo, laying down some serious fretwork!

Another Exit

- The first song to feature a special guest, in this case - Jay Oliver. Jay's been one of my absolute heroes (if not THE hero) since I first heard the Dave Weckl/Dave Weckl Band-records in high school (or rather, the Swedish equivalent to it). Besides being a great guy, his talent in songwriting, playing & producing are truly exceptional, and I don't think his appearance here will disappoint anyone! The genesis of this track was a melody that somehow got stuck in my head. When I later sat down at the piano all the parts just came together and I wrote the whole thing that same evening. When arranging it at a rehearsal with Aron, we came up with a shuffle displacement over the second part of the solo section, which turned out way cooler than any of our previous ideas, so we decided to keep it. The initial thought was to have a synth solo over the first two parts, and then have a guitar solo over the third (and final) part. But when Jay accepted my invite to make a guest appearance on this track, we decided to let him have all the parts to himself! Listening to it now, I definitely think we made the right call!! The outro has a cool Karizma-vibe going on with Erik (Linder, guitar) tearing it up on top. Easily one of my favorite tracks on the CD.

Quintana Roo

- This was the first track that I wrote for this project. It's based on a 12/8 afro-cuban type of feel that's always been a favorite of mine. I remember coming up with the groove at a rehearsal back in 2005, at the time I was listening a lot to Michel Camilo's stuff with Anthony Jackson on bass, and I think that influence shines through quite a lot - basswise - on this one (well, to be honest, the Anthony Jackson-influence is pretty much all over the record!). The intro is a bit reminiscent of Yellowjackets around the Four Corners-era, and I dunno why; but the atmospheric bass solo section always bring to mind the Pat Metheny Group (perhaps it's the marching drum pattern?). Features Arvid (Svenungsson, keyboards) & myself as soloists.

Luna Nueva (Only a Dream)

- The title track & also the only ballad on the CD. I began work on this one in 2005, but it wasn't until early 2007 (when my grandmother passed away suddenly) that I got around to finish it. Writing this one certainly helped me to put closure on her passing, and it's also dedicated to her memory. Great performances from all the cats, making it just as slick as I imagined it would be, with the cherry on top being Jens' (Filipsson, alto sax) solo that really brings the whole track to another level! The title is a metaphor for the beginning of a new "journey" or "existence" after death, whatever that may be.

Splinter

- The idea for this song was born on Easter Day 2006, when after a night out (& under the influence of a vast amount of alcohol) I came home, picked up the bass, and from the top of my head started playing this slap groove incorporating the EBS Octabass-pedal. I stopped and thought "Yeah, cool! Gotta remember to pick up this thread tomorrow...", and then I crashed. The next day I was actually able to recall most of what I had played the night before (though heavily hungover), and all the pieces of the puzzle was assembled rather quickly. The only part of the song that wasn't written on that day was the pre-solo section, which was an earlier idea that somehow just happened to fit right in! Although I ended up not using the EBS Octabass-pedal on the final version of the track (it would be too much for the faint-of-heart-non-bassists out there), I think it sounds freakin' great. The pre-solo section has a few cool twists & turns, and the solo by Calle (Stålenbring, guitar) is just blazing!

Adrenochrome

- The last song written for the CD & also the most schizophrenic, without a doubt. It's the second one to feature a special guest, or actually two special guests this time! Jason Rebello (one of my all-time favorite pianists!) & Eric Marienthal (one of my all-time favorite sax players!!) are both featured on this track. It's basically built around a swing/funk-groove with a few changes in feel along the way. Jason & Eric play their asses off (as expected!) and they sure bring some great energy to the track! The bass/synth melody section is a tribute of sorts to Lyle Mays & Pat Metheny. The Metheny-esque chord changes & especially the synth lead patch that Arvid utilizes during this part has become - more or less - a trademark of the Pat Metheny Group. The title is a nod to a) the incredible author Hunter S. Thompson & his book Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and b) Terry Gilliam's movie adaptation of the book with Johnny Depp & Benicio del Toro playing the leads (both turning in stellar performances, I might add!). Oh yeah, almost forgot, the use of Adrenochrome is said to cause schizophrenia, hence the schizophrenic nature of the song!

Past Tense - Pt. I

- This piece was put together by Erik. I had already written the song and felt that there should be some kind of intro to set up the mood of the song. I explained to him what I was looking for, he got the idea right away and threw this little prelude together!

Past Tense - Pt. II

- I was sitting at the piano working on a song for Split Vision when I began to play around with some min11-chords. I remember thinking "this has got some potential" and made a mental note of what I was doing. A couple of days later I revisited the idea and developed it, along with a structure for the song, adding the somewhat "smooth" solo section that I thought would be a cool break from the rest of the track (just to take it in a different direction for a while). I decided right away that I'd play my fretless Neuser on this one, and it's actually one of three tracks where it's used (the other two being "Luna Nueva (Only a Dream)" & "Adrenochrome"). I'm also featured as a soloist here, together with Erik, who does one helluva job by the way! He's got loads of really nice & silky Michael Landau/Allan Holdsworth-voicings in there, and a solo with lots and lots of emotion that just adds to the whole "porn groove"-feel of that particular section. Originally, I was thinking of a Chad Wackerman/Gary Husband-approach for the drums. Aron, however, insisted on more of a Jeff Porcaro-approach... listening to the track now, I'm glad he did!

Seven Summits

- This one came about a bit differently. Aron was toying around with some synths in Logic one day, and sent me an mp3 with approximately 30 seconds of him playing a keyboard motif with this really cool synth patch. I fell in love with the sound from the get-go 'cause it reminded me of Ozric Tentacles, a group that I listened to a lot while in my teens. Aron thought I should write a song for this project based on the motif/synth patch, and so I did! The main groove was very much inspired by the collaboration/interplay between Will Kennedy & Jimmy Haslip of the Yellowjackets, and of course I couldn't resist to throw some Anthony Jackson into the mix as well! The B section has a kinda soaring Pat Metheny Group-feel to it (come to think about it - so does the A section!) and was planned to be played in "cut" time (2/2 meter), but Aron came up with the brilliant idea of having it in "common" time (4/4 meter) instead, giving it an extra push with a nice groove, while still having that soaring quality. Andreas (Ekstedt, percussion) worked some of his darbouka-magic on this track, making it even more world music-influenced than before. Also, Arvid & Jens treats us with really cool synth & sax solos respectively! The title is referring to the highest mountains on the seven continents (Everest, Kilimanjaro, Elbrus, Denali, Aconcagua, Vinson & Carstensz Pyramid), which I thought was apt since the track has a certain world music-vibe, complete with some etno-inspired soundscapes.

Tierra del Fuego

- I've always had a thing for the intructional videos of the late 80s & early 90s, with guys like Jeff Porcaro, Dave Weckl, John Patitucci, Chick Corea etc. Now, I admit that the clothes & hairdos are alluring, but most of all, it's the semi-cheesy music that I'm somehow extremely fond of! So when I decided to release a solo CD, I felt I just had to write a tune that was close to that style, it was inevitable! If you haven't noticed already, I'm a big fan of Dave Weckl/Dave Weckl Band, and this song is very much a hommage to Dave Weckl & Jay Oliver, and the early latin stuff they did ("Festival de Ritmo", "Tomatillo", "Island Magic" etc.). It also features the last special guest - the amazing Otmaro Ruiz! Actually, when I wrote this track I had two people in mind for the guest spot, it was either gonna be Otmaro Ruiz or Steve Weingart (ex-Dave Weckl Band, whom I also admire & have a great deal of respect for). As a matter of fact, Steve and I talked about having him on this track, but due to scheduling conflicts it didn't work out. As it turned out though, Otmaro was more than happy to be a part of this project & was able to make some time in his busy schedule for the recording session! He's such a great guy & gifted musician, I really advice you to check out his latest CD Sojourn if you haven't already, it's awesome! Not to mention his performance on this track... well, here's a two word sum-up for ya - ON FIRE! The same goes for Aron & Andreas, who both deliver top-notch playing & solid grooves throughout (Aron is also featured as a soloist on this track). "Tierra del Fuego" is Spanish for "Land of Fire", a title I felt was appropriate considering the track is pretty feisty!

Ok, that's it for now, goodnite!

So, I finally found some time to compile Aron's footage from last summer's recording sessions. Unfortunately, we only got parts of the guitar tracking & mixing sessions caught on tape, since we forgot to film the rest... but I guess that will just have to do! Also, it was edited using Windows Movie Maker, so don't expect anything too fancy...

To make things a little easier for all of you that don't speak Swedish, I've taken the liberty to add subtitles to every part.
YES, it is true, in early September we put the final touches to the mix & got it mastered (I thought I'd never see the day), and listening to it again just now I must say it sounds FANTASTIC! I'm really excited about the whole thing, and I can't wait to let all of you fusion aficionados out there hear it!!

It's been in the making since 2006, and due to various circumstances (too many to list here) it's taken way longer than expected to finish. Recorded on and off over the last couple of years & mixed/mastered this summer @ Moose Studio by the great Kalle Persson (see my "Top Friends"), I can now - at last! - present to you some samples!

The CD contains 10 originals composed by yours truly (except for one track), and joining me on this project are the extremely talented:

Aron Mellergårdh - Drums/percussion/loops
Andreas Ekstedt - Percussion
Erik Linder - Guitar
Jonathan Fritzén - Keyboard
Jonas Isaksson - Guitar
Arvid Svenungsson - Keyboards/loops
Jens Filipsson - Alto saxophone
Calle Stålenbring - Guitar

+ SPECIAL GUESTS:

Otmaro Ruiz, Jason Rebello, Eric Marienthal & Jay Oliver!

(all of the above are listed under "Top Friends", with the exception of Arvid Svenungsson, but for now you can check the Split Vision MySpace page for some more info on him)

I don't have a release date set, however, a record deal is being worked on, and I'll of course keep you updated here as things progress on that front! So, in the meantime - enjoy the sampler and let me know what you think!!

Later
/Johannes

Ps. I'll probably be adding some "in the making"-footage in a not-too-distant future... so keep checking back!
